- Why use a “Thread Chaser” instead of a standard tap? A tap is designed to cut new threads and removes metal. The chasers in the 54351-5M are designed to re-align and clean existing threads of carbon and rust without weakening the host metal.
- Is the 22mm size universal? Yes. 22mm (7/8″) is the standard size for almost all automotive oxygen sensors used by domestic and import manufacturers.
- Can I use an impact wrench with these sockets? No. Because of the side-slot design, O2 sensor sockets have a “split” in the wall. The vibration of an impact wrench can cause the socket to spread or crack. Use a manual breaker bar for seized sensors.
- When should I use the M18 chaser? Use it whenever a new oxygen sensor is being installed. Cleaning the manifold threads first ensures the new sensor seats correctly and prevents future seizing.
